How Are You Spending Your Time? Foam rolling or strengthening?

October 10, 2023

How to be efficient with your time when training in the gym.

What's the best way to spend your time when exercising?

I have a confession to make, I love watching Frasier. If you haven’t seen it, it’s a comedy about two snobby psychiatrists living in Seattle.

I enjoy it so much I bought every series. There are 11. Each contains 24 episodes which are about 25 minutes long.

A quick bit of maths will tell you that’s over 100 hours of television.

It gets worse though,  I’ve seen every episode at least twice. Let’s call it 200 hours, or over a week of my life just sitting there watching this stuff.

What else could I have done with 200 hours?

I’m pretty sure I could’ve improved my French. Not difficult as I don’t know any. Or learned to play a few notes on the piano.

OK now it’s your turn.

Let’s apply the same logic to the gym. Most people spend at least 15 mins rolling around on a piece of foam, or stretching before or after their session.

If you train twice a week that’s 26 hours of activity a year that’s doing very little for you.

What if you spent the same amount of time training the muscles groups you were attempting to release?

Do you think you’d be in a better situation a year from now?

I bet you Frasier series 9 and 10 (they ain’t great) you would.

We often don’t assess the long term cost or benefit of our choices.

This is particularly true with exercise.

Just going through what you think you should do, rather than what an expert has recommended you do, can lead to very different outcomes.
